Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, strolling towards the sunrise while wrapped in an American flag. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “2018” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The patriotic image is borrowed from the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by renowned early 20th century sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.
Reverse: A heraldic eagle appears on the reverse with a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its grasp. This image, created by 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, is the primary identifying characteristic of the Type-1 style Silver Eagle that was issued from 1986 until mid-2021. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” the West Point Mint mark “W” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
