Obverse: The likeness of John Adams dressed in a sophisticated colonial style coat is centered on the obverse. The portrait is encircled by the inscriptions “JOHN ADAMS,” “PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.” and “A.D. 1797.” This interpretation of the President is borrowed from the bronze Presidential Medal designed by U.S. Mint engraver Moritz Furst.
Reverse: The reverse design features a symbolic handshake between an American military officer and a Native American, representing the friendship between the U.S. government and the Native American nations, with a crossed tomahawk and peace pipe above. Inscribed “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP.” The image was created by U.S. Mint Engraver John Reich.
