This 2 oz Silver Macau Numismatic Society Expo Panda Proof continues a young but rich tradition of Chinese Show Pandas. The coin was a major attraction at the Expo, which took place in November 2018. Part of a mintage of just 1,000 pieces, this coin is sure to prove elusive for most collectors. It was struck at the Guobao Mint from two ounces of .999 fine silver. Each piece is individually numbered near the bottom edge of the rim.
Exquisite Playful Pandas Design
The obverse features two pandas playing on rocky ground. To the right is a logo along with the words “BAY AREA MACAU SPECIAL NUMISMATIC EXHIBITION.” The Chinese translation of that is also included.
The reverse features two distinctive views of Macau, its tallest tower and its new light rail. The light rail, which connects Macau Island to Cotai Island, home of the new casinos, opened shortly before the Expo. The coin’s face value is also included on this face, as are the rim inscriptions “2018 MACAU NUMISMATIC SOCIETY” and “30TH ANNIVERSARY EXPO 11/22-11/26.

This coin received Numismatic Guaranty Corporation’s (NGC’s) second highest grade, Proof 69, which means that it is nearly perfect as seen by the unaided eye. It also certified the coin Ultra Cameo for the sharp contrasts between its heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields and First Releases, which means that NGC received it no more than thirty days after its initial mint release.
