The obverse features the iconic Walking Liberty design. This design was first released in 1916 on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and is often credited with bringing American coinage into the modern age. The design features Walking Liberty as she holds an arm out in welcome while in the other she carries branches of laurel and oak, with a burst of sunlight radiating to her left.
The reverse echoes that of the U.S. Great Seal. This rendition of the seal was created by the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti.
