Both passed away in 2018, and Commonwealth Mint now honors them with a pair of silver poof medals. Stunning President George Bush and Barbara Design Created by Don Everhart
The obverse features a stunning portrait of the loving couple looking off into the distance. This Medal was both designed and sculpted by former U.S Mint Lead sculptor, Don Everhart, who was responsible for the designs of many medals and coins. He continues to be involved in the Numismatic world today, and lent his expertise to the Commonwealth Mint to create this touching Medal. Their advanced age is clear, but so are their warm smiles and positive outlook. Their names, “GEORGE H. W. BUSH AND BARBARA BUSH,” are inscribed along the rim above their effigies.
At the center of the reverse is a plaque that George Bush kept in his office. It says, “CAVU CEILING AND VISIBILITY UNLIMITED.” The expression references ideal flying conditions for pilots flying from aircraft carriers, as Bush did during World War II. Bush referenced the expression in a letter that he wrote to his children prior to the Gulf War. He said that his life was CAVU on account of them. The White House stands above the plaque, and a ribbon with the dates of Bush’s presidency, “1989-1993,” is at the bottom of it.

This coin received Numismatic Guaranty Corporation’s (NGC’s) second highest grade, Proof 69. That means that it is flawless as seen by the naked eye. It also received Ultra Cameo certification, which means that its heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields contrast sharply on both faces. The grading information is provided on NGC’s standard brown label. Each Medal will be accompanied by a story card that features the signature of this coin’s creator, Don Everhart!
