Gorgeous Gold Eagle Design
Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse confidently striding forward, holding aloft a flaming torch of enlightenment and an olive branch of peace. Rays of a dawning sun appear in the background above the Capitol Building dome, while fifty stars surround the image. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” the Mint mark “W,” and the 1986 date of issue represented as the Roman numerals “MCMLXXXVI.” The image is borrowed from the iconic 1907 Gold Double Eagle, which was designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in collaboration with President Theodore Roosevelt.
Reverse: The reverse features an eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nesting family. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “1 OZ. FINE GOLD” and “50 DOLLARS.” The wildlife image, which typifies the 1986-2021 Gold Eagle Type-1 style, is the work of award-winning American sculptor Miley Busiek.
