Description

Why Purchase This GEM Unc 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Silver Plated Medal?

It was the summer of 1969 that Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon and uttered the words that we still remember today as the world watched in awe. This medal was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. It is actually based on the original 1969 Apollo 11 medals that were made by Robbins. The medal shown here is made of cupronickel and has been plated with silver. It was struck by a very reputable private mint in the U.S., Sunshine Minting.

Powerful Apollo 11 Designs

As mentioned, this medal was based on the originals from 1969. What’s interesting about the obverse design is that it’s almost identical to the design of the Apollo 11 patch. The eagle is holding an olive branch as it prepares to touch down on the moon. This design was also used on both the Eisenhower (1971-1974, 1977-1978) and Susan B. Anthony (1979-1981, 1999) dollars.

Information about the Apollo 11 mission can be found on the reverse. The upper portion is inscribed with the last names of the astronauts. The key dates of the mission are at the center and the 50th anniversary dates are at the bottom.

NGC GEM Unc

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation was chosen to grade this medal. Since this specimen still looks like it just left the Mint, it was assigned the grade of GEM Uncirculated.
