Not only was 1964 the first year of issue for the Kennedy Half Dollar in proof sets, it was also a new all-time high mintage for proof sets with 3,950,762 sets minted and sold.
1964 was also the last year the regular issue 90% silver coins would be minted. The next year, the silver was eliminated from the quarter and dime and was reduced to 40% for the Kennedy Half Dollar.
This proof set included: the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel and the Lincoln Cent.
This set was originally packaged in the “flat pack” packaging where each coin was sealed individually in cellophane before being placed between to pieces of cardboard and stuck into a yellow envelope. The envelope was stamped with the Treasury Department address and “1964 P.C.”
