Description

Why does this 1907 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coin belong in your collection?

The U.S. Mint introduced the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle series in 1907. The coin’s imagery is credited to acclaimed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who worked in collaboration with President Theodore Roosevelt to finalize the design. Initially, the coin’s appearance was not favored by the public due to its lack of the national motto “In God We Trust.” The Mint remedied the issue by adding the motto to the coin’s reverse in August 1908.

  • This is a first year of issue 1907 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coin!
  • The coin contains 0.9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The coin is a Philadelphia Mint product.
  • The coin features a 34 mm diameter.
  • The coin’s edge is lettered with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and a pattern of stars.
  • The coin is part of a 361,667 piece mintage.

Breathtaking Rendition of Lady Liberty

Obverse: Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse, confidently stepping forward while holding a torch of enlightenment and an olive branch of peace in her outstretched arms, as the sun rises over the U.S. Capitol Building in the background. Inscribed “LIBERTY” and “1907.” The stars bordering the image represent the number of states in the union, which amounted to forty-six at the time of issue. The absence of a Mint mark confirms that the coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

Reverse: The reverse image is emblematic of the pursuit of freedom. It features a majestic eagle in flight with rays of stylized sunlight in the background. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
