Description

Why add this 1899 Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS63 to your collection?

This 1899 Morgan Silver Dollar has several points of appeal for collectors, not the least of which is that it combines relatively good condition with affordability. Examples of this coin tend to carry much higher premiums at MS65 and above, so for collectors who are on limited budgets, this piece is a good option. Mintage of the coin was 330,000, a number that even novice collectors tend to remember easily. The coin gets its name from the man who designed it, George T. Morgan. One of the reasons that it is so highly regarded is that it features an Americanized Liberty. Previous versions of the figure were almost exclusively Greek in style, but this one, for which Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as his model, was decidedly not. Liberty’s long hair curls down the back of her neck, while a Phrygian cap covers the back of her head. A ribbon that bears the inscription of the word “LIBERTY” is slightly behind her hairline. Like many other American coins, the reverse features an eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch. Other than the wings, which extend upwards and nearly touch the edge, the figure is surrounded by a wreath, which runs under it, and the words “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the national motto, over its head.
