Powerful Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin were designed by George T. Morgan. Obverse: On the obverse is a left-side profile of Liberty, for whom Morgan chose Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, as his model. She wears a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, “LIBERTY,” and a crown made from one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Along the rim are thirteen stars, which represent the original states, and two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1886.”
Reverse: An eagle stretches its wings toward the rim while clutching arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath on the reverse. Between its wings is an inscription of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the face value of the coin, “ONE DOLLAR.”
