Featuring the Patriotic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
Obverse: George T. Morgan designed both faces of this coin. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty, whom Morgan showed as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style one. In addition to a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, “LIBERTY,” and a Phrygian cap, she dons a crown of cotton and wheat, one Southern crop and one Northern one. She is encircled by two rim inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1883,” and thirteen stars.
Reverse: An open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch, on the reverse. Above the bird’s head is an inscription of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Along the rim are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the coin’s face value, “ONE DOLLAR.”
