Why order this Silver 1882-O Morgan Dollar?

The Morgan Silver Dollar is an iconic coin that even those who don’t otherwise collect coins can’t help but love. George T. Morgan’s obverse design helped to bring the nation together after a bloody Civil War, as he used an American-style model for Liberty and showed her wearing both Northern and Southern symbols. This 1882-O piece is a particularly attractive option for students of American history since it was struck at the New Orleans Mint, i.e. in the South.

  • This coin was $1 US legal tender.
  • It was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver.
  • The coin bears the “O” mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
  • This dollar comes from a mintage of 6,090,000 pieces.
  • The Morgan Silver Dollar is among the most beloved coins in American history.
  • Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) graded this coin Mint State 63.

Unifying Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

This coin takes its name from the man who designed it, George T. Morgan. Obverse: On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. She dons a Phrygian cap and a crown of cotton and wheat, a Northern crop and a Southern one. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1882.”

Reverse: On the reverse, an open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch. Above the bird’s head an inscription of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Rim inscriptions encircling the design provide the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the coin’s face value, “ONE DOLLAR.”
