The U.S. Mint has issued an impressive number of coins for circulation throughout the history of our nation. Today, one of the most widely collected classic U.S. coins is the Morgan silver dollar. The San Francisco Mint struck this Morgan dollar in 1881. Like other classic silver dollars, this coin is 90% silver. This piece had a moderate mintage, there were 12,760,000 of these struck.

Morgan’s Highly Detailed Liberty Obverse and Bald Eagle Reverse

The woman depicted on the obverse is Liberty. She can be seen facing the left and wearing a small cap. The date is at the bottom of the design. There are also 13 stars here. Both sides of this coin were designed by George T. Morgan.

The face value is located on the reverse and this is where the mintmark can be found as well. A detailed wreath is just above the face value, it partially surrounds a bald eagle with its wings held high.
