The Medieval Austrian 3 Kruezer was a common silver coin circulated within the regions of the Holy Roman Empire. This approximately 20 mm diameter coin was struck in 1624 for Emperor Ferdinand II, ruler of the Empire from 1619-1637.
Dramatic Imperial Portrait
The image of Ferdinand II adorns the obverse, wearing a stiff ruffled collar; Mint mark for Vienna in a circle below. Inscribed “FERDI II D G R I S A G H B REX,” the Latin abbreviation for “Ferdinand II, by the Grace of God, Emperor of the Romans, always August, King of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia.”
The reverse features the double-headed Imperial Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire with the arms of Austria and Burgundy, surrounded by the inscription “ARCHID AV D BVR CO TY” (Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Tyrol) and “3,” with “624” representing the year of release.
